The Standard School Program consists of the following : |

Standard Historical School Program for Grades 2-5 Available Tuesday-Friday, April - June and September - November from 10 am -2pm Picnic pavilions usually available. A. Hands-on Native American workshop B. Tour of Fort Hunter Mansion C. Visit to Museum Shop Note: Schools can schedule a tour of the Mansion without the workshop. A. Hands-on Workshop: Native Americans along the Susquehanna Your students will explore how Indians once lived in the Fort Hunter/Harrisburg area. They will focus on how Indians obtained food, shelter, clothing and equipment. Activities include furnishing a wigwam, making a piece of pottery and participatory storytelling. Children will handle the kinds of food, materials and equipment once used by Native Americans who farmed and hunted here in the 1300s and 1400s. ● For grades 2-5, maximum of 65 students ● Time: 1 ½ hours ● Addresses State Standards: 8.1.3A, 8.1.3.D, 8.2.3C, 8.2.3B, 1.6.3A, 1.6.3D, 1.6.3E. Also 8.1.6A, 8.1.6B, 8.2.6A, 8.2.6B, 8.2.6C, 1.6.5A, 1.6.5.D, 1.6.5E Please provide a teacher and at least one adult (free admission) to help with the workshop. Groups of over 32 children will be split-half will start with the workshop and half with the Mansion tour. After lunch they switch. B. Tour of Fort Hunter Mansion This historic house invites students to learn about Mansion life in the 1800s. Children will compare the owners' life to Native Americans - how they obtained food, shelter, clothing and equipment in the Victorian era. On guided tours students will see original artifacts and furnishings - from a chamber pot and rope bed to a music box and foot warmer. The tour and visit to the Museum Shop last 1 ½ hours. C. Visit the Museum Shop At the conclusion of the Mansion tour, children will visit the educationally oriented shop. Many of the items are historical reproductions; children enjoy finding a memory-making treasure, many of which are priced under $6. Proceeds fund educational programs at Fort Hunter. You will be sent a confirmation letter with map & parking directions. The Standard School Program is available by reservation only April – June and September - November. Teachers will be expected to help with some aspects of the workshop activities. Fort Hunter Mansion Tour This marvelous house invites students into a world of curiosity and learning about life in the 1800s. Guided tours offer students the opportunity to explore life as it was 100 years ago, as they view artifacts and ask questions. They will discover such oddities as meat grinders, a chamber pot, rope beds, stereoscopes, foot warmers, a Regina music box and many other ways of life now passed. Special One-Day Event on Friday, May 9, 2008 Recommended for grades 4-6 Rain or shine This program, provided by the Donegal Township Rifleman, Inc., demonstrates 1750s frontier life with a series of outdoor stations. Students move from place to place, seeing blacksmithing, cooking, military drills, clothing, deerskin tanning and more.
